AI4DI: An Artificial Intelligence Boost for European Industry

07.01.20

From advanced search engine algorithms to autonomous cars, artificial intelligence (AI) is a force that is progressing rapidly. Since the term AI was coined in 1956, it has subsequently paved the way for automation and formal reasoning that we see in computers today, including decision support systems that can be designed to complement and augment human capabilities. AI has the potential to help civilization flourish like never before — in consideration of the technology remaining solely beneficial to society.

According to the European Commission, there is a lack of AI integration in Europe. The purpose of the AI4DI (Artificial Intelligence for Digitizing Industry) Project is to transfer machine learning (ML) and AI from the cloud to the digitizing industry. The project intends to connect factories, processes and devices within the digitized industry by utilizing ML and AI for human collaboration, change detection, and detection of abnormalities. The data gathered from the project will be used to change semantics and the logical layer for purposes such as quality control and product optimization.

The 39 partners participating in the project can be found on the official AI4DI website. The overall budget for AI4DI is €30 062 525 which includes an EU contribution of €8 763 190, 67. AI4DI Project commenced on May 1, 2019 and will continue until May 31, 2022.

At Vaisto, our initiative for AI4DI is to research and approach industrial problems using reinforcement learning and realistic simulation environments supporting the problem scenarios. Realistic simulation environments are to be used for the validation of algorithms and specifications as well as for training machine learning models. The output of the simulation environments is transferable machine learning models and specifications for the real world scenarios.
